Life Altering Reality Makes Debut On Movie-Going Couple

It struck us this weekend. Another of what is sure to be a long series of 'firsts' for us.

Jas and I went out for a movie Sunday. Comic book and video game franchise movies get us excited. Especially if they look like they are done well. So it should come to no surprise that the preview of the upcoming "Iron Man" movie with Robert Downey, Jr. got us a bit giddy! The release headline reads "Coming May 2008".

J: "We're going to have to go see that!"
D: "Yeah, looks good" (We bump knuckles. So hip and trendy.)
J: "We'll have to get a baby-sitter."
D: "Yeah...wait..."
J: "..."
D: "...OH my gawd!"

Did she SERIOUSLY just say that?! A baby-sitter? This must be how it happens! One thing at a time...the realization that nothing will ever be quite as simple as it once was.

Womens Center-A Man's Point Of View

Yesterday brought us a tour of the Womens Center where our Jade is scheduled to be born. I can say it's probably called a womens center because you really DON'T need a man there for anything to happen. A feminist would likely tell you that this is proof that you don't really need a man at all. Except for that fact that a man is likely the reason she's there in the first place...and even that can be reduced to an impersonal insemination. Which means that men are really only good for one thing, which fortunately is something that the average adult male is pretty good at. Jerking off into a cup. I digress...

First off, the center is nice. Plush enough to make it feel comfortable, but sparse and sterile enough that you can't mistake it for a hospital.

I'll give my overall view of the three highlights of the tour. My interpretations are in blue.

1. Registration
"If you have a scheduled induction or c-section, you will check in here at which time you'll be admitted and show to your room on the second floor. If you're having unexpected contrations, or if you think your water is broken, you'll still check in here (please please please don't sit down though) and then you'll go back through these doors to triage where they will assess your status (you're probably over-reacting). If it does appear that you're ready to go, you will be escorted up to the second floor (you get to be the woman screaming from labor contractions that's wheeled through the lobby on the gurney passing in front of a group of high school girls who immediately leave and head to the 'other' clinic)."

2. Birthing floor
Standard fare, clean, bright in the hallways. Rooms are subdued and cozier with chairs for the allotted visitors, large bathroom with showers and any needed mobility equipment. TV with DVD player for watching movies and listening to music. Space for your stuff. But the cool part is the bed. Normal hospital bed with the adjustable back, crisp white sheets, ect. "But once you're ready to deliver, the portion at the end here lifts off (oooh neat!) revealing the stirrups which are raised into place (...I'm listening...) and you're moved into position for delivery (NOW we're talkin'! Can we get one for the house...you know...to...errr...'practice' for the next one?)." After delivery, baby is placed in the warmer...which kinda resembles a rotisserie if you ask me. And bring a sweater. Kinda cool in there.

3. Recovery floor
Spacious room with privacy curtain, all necessary facilities, TV/DVD, well lit windows, ect. We'll expect to be there for 24-48 hours. Mamma is made comfortable; people come and go in thier various duties, paperwork, photographs, checkups, ect. I get a look were I'm gonna be spending the next two days helping Jas recover, cooing over the baby, and filling out paperwork. The fold out chair that serves as a cot looks like it's best suited to someone half my height. The way I figure...mom just went through this discomfort of labor, delivery, and recovery; time to make daddy uncomfortable too. :/ Ok. I can soldier up. But I'm bringing a pillow to the fight...

Latest Purchases.....

We visited a baby resale store Ditto Kiddo and found a gently used Arm's Reach Co-sleeper. Usual retail price is about 160, we got it for 60 less :). Pretty cool eh?

I also ordered our first onesies for Piglet at Made with Molecules - they'll have this image, which is the molecule for oxycotin:
